What is a hollow cup motor?

   The hollow cup motor breaks through the rotor structure of the traditional motor in structure, and adopts an ironless rotor, also called a hollow cup rotor. This novel rotor structure completely eliminates thfe power loss caused by eddy currents formed by the iron core.

   At the same time, its weight and moment of inertia are greatly reduced, thereby reducing the mechanical energy loss of the rotor itself. Due to the structural change of the rotor, the running characteristics of the motor have been greatly improved, which not only has outstanding energy-saving characteristics, but more importantly, has the control and drag characteristics that cannot be achieved by iron core motors.

   Hollow cup motors belong to DC permanent magnet motors, which can also be classified as micro-motors. The hollow cup motor has outstanding energy-saving characteristics, sensitive and convenient control characteristics and stable operation characteristics, and has obvious technical advantages. As a high-efficiency energy conversion device, it represents the development direction of electric motors in many fields.

Self-supporting winding technology of hollow cup motors

  The self-supporting winding of the hollow cup is made of enameled wire. The enameled wire is composed of two parts: copper conductor and insulating paint layer. After the bare wire is softened by annealing, it is painted and baked for many times. During the manufacturing process, the paint on adjacent copper wires is melted together by applying pressure and temperature. Paint is a thermoplastic that contains a solvent that makes it easy to mold. During the high temperature manufacturing process, the solvent gas escapes, the thermoplastic becomes hard, and the winding has a certain stability and stiffness. Proper bonding (tape or fiberglass) can further increase the strength and dimensional stability of the wrap.   The hollow cup motor is divided into two types: brushed and brushless. The brushed motor has no iron core in the rotor, and the brushless motor (also known as the ironless hollow cup motor) has no iron core in the stator. It consists of stator poles, rotors, brushes, shells, etc.

The stator poles are made of permanent magnets (permanent magnet steel), including ferrite, AlNiCo, NdFeB and other materials. According to its structure, it can be divided into cylindrical type and tile type.

The rotor is generally made of laminated silicon steel sheets, and the enameled wire is wound between the two slots of the rotor core (three slots have three windings), and each joint is welded to the metal sheet of the commutator.

The brush is a conductive part that connects the power supply and the rotor winding, and has both electrical conductivity and wear resistance. The brushes of the permanent magnet motor use single metal sheets or metal graphite brushes, electrochemical graphite brushes, and use the cooperation of carbon brushes (or metal brushes) and commutators to complete the commutation. The brushless hollow-cup motor does not have this physical structure, and is composed of a permanent magnet rotor, a multi-pole winding stator, and a position sensor. The brushless DC motor is characterized by brushless, which uses semiconductor switching devices (such as Hall elements) to achieve electronic commutation, that is, electronic switching devices are used to replace traditional contact commutators and brushes. It has the advantages of high reliability, no commutation sparks, and low mechanical noise.

According to the change of the rotor position, the position sensor commutates the current of the stator winding along a certain order (that is, detects the position of the rotor magnetic pole relative to the stator winding, and generates a position sensing signal at the determined position, which is processed by the signal conversion circuit. Control the power switch circuit and switch the winding current according to a certain logical relationship. The coil of the brushless hollow cup is fixed, and the permanent magnet rotates in the middle as the rotor.
